Press Release

Local Organizations Partner for Cyber Security Awareness Month

2008 kickoff to be celebrated October 1, 2008 at the John Paul Jones Arena

CONTACT: Marty Peterman, 434.243.4909 or martyp@virginia.edu

RELEASE DATE: September 29, 2008

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - In coordination with the National Cyber Security Alliance, a diverse group of concerned local organizations are working together again this year to promote cyber security awareness during October in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area.

The press is invited to attend the kick-off event on Wednesday, October 1, at the John Paul Jones Arena.  Join us to learn what free cyber security awareness events are planned for the month ahead and discuss the importance of cyber security awareness with local VIPs. And, please stay for a gourmet box lunch.

This cross-sector initiative partners UVA Community Credit Union, the University of Virginia, Charlottesville City Government, Albemarle County Government, Charlottesville City Schools, Albemarle County Schools, The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) in a community effort to help area residents learn how to protect themselves better online.

A comprehensive website, WhosWatchingCharlottesville.org, includes helpful information on setting up a more secure home wireless network; avoiding viruses, spyware, and adware; shopping online more safely; ensuring kids' safety online; protecting your privacy on paper; and responding to identity theft.

What People Are Saying about the “Who’s Watching Charlottesville?” Campaign

  • “We hope the ‘Who’s Watching Charlottesville’ website continues to serve as a gateway for Charlottesville area residents to learn how best to protect themselves and their loved ones online,” said Shirley Payne, Director of Security and Policy at the University of Virginia. “This site features lots of content and an award-winning short video on the dangers of revealing too much on social networking websites.”
  • “This year, we hope the ‘Who's Watching?’ campaign encourages people to recognize that the Web is an incredible community with much to offer, but like any community, we must understand how to protect ourselves and our loved ones from potential threats,” said Leslie Robinson, Vice President of Information Systems at the UVA Community Credit Union.
  • “It’s important to learn as much as we can about what’s happening online so that we teach our kids how to make smart choices when they’re on the Internet,” noted Mark Leach, Network Administrator at Charlottesville City Schools, and a father of three young daughters.
  • “Taking just a few simple steps to protect yourself online can make an enormous difference,” added Lee Catlin, Community Relations Manager for Albemarle County.
